Over the past ten years, we have increasingly been tasked with designing CHW Plant System Renovations for maximum energy efficiency due to our reputation for properly addressing Low Delta temperature syndrome in existing CHW systems.
Our designs incorporate the most current energy-efficient practices, such as the following:
- High-efficiency chiller selection, utilizing magnetic bearing, variable-speed centrifugal, or variablespeed screw compressor machines for both water-cooled and air-cooled systems.
- Variable primary VHW flow pumping systems of single building systems or variable primary/variable secondary pumping systems for campus or a multi-building complex.
- Lower-cost alternatives for makeup water system in place of traditional city water, utilizing underground wells or aquifers where available. Also incorporating state-of-the art cooling tower treatment systems such as electro-cell particulate systems.
- CHW Plant Controls Design for Optimization of Operation and Energy Efficiency, which includes elimination of Low-Delta T syndrome in the Plant and downstream in the CHW distribution system serving the Air Handling Unit systems with CHW coils.
Four recent CHW Plant Renovation project examples executed within the last two years that incorporated all or most of the above energy efficiency strategies for the federal government are as follows:
- Chamblee IRS Building (900 tons, 350k SF) in Dekalb County
- Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center (3,600 tons, 1.9 M SF) in Downtown Atlanta
- Peachtree Summit Federal Building (1,250 tons, 850k SF) in Downtown Atlanta
- Augusta Federal Courthouse (300 tons, 75k SF) in Augusta, GA.
All four projects were on General Services Administration (GSA) facilities and were contracted under a Utility Energy Services Contract (UESC) with Southern Company. All projects are currently under construction and will be completed in the later part of this summer.
